The Blind Me Down "Hand of the Week" - Hand 2 by Mike Behr

The inaugural post of the "Hand of the Week" went fairly well. We had
a somewhat diverse group of thinkers weigh in on the hand and now you
get to hear the results. The villain in seat five had re-raised our
hero, Rock Lobster, on the turn. Rock took up his entire time bank thinking
this through and finally decided to fold. Rock thought "I'm behind. I'm
putting my tournament life on the line for the miracle card on the river.
That's just not how I rock-n-roll." The villain decided to show Rock his
hand at the end and it was A Q. He hit top two pair on the turn and
typed in that he was worried about Rock hitting the flush on the river
- pinching the pot away from him. Very smart on his part and I think
very smart on Rock's part. Sorry to Greg and Mark who would have
had the "nuts" to call in that spot and probably lose the rest of their chips.

And now on to this week's "Hand of the Week"

The blinds are 100/200 and our hero, Rock Lobster is sitting in middle position. We
start out the hand with 6520 in chips. We are the chip leader at the
table and seem to have control at the moment. The cards are dealt and
we look down at A of clubs and Q of clubs.Seats 1,2,3 fold. Rock bets out
600. Seats 5, 6 and the button fold and just the small blind calls.
The small blind has been somewhat choosey of his hands so far and is
sitting on a stack of 4850. Pot is now 1400. Flop comes 4c 9c Jh. A
pretty good flop for Rock. He didn't hit a pair but he has the nut
flush draw and two cards to come. Villian checks. Rock makes a continuation bet of 800 in
an attempt to sweeten the pot in case he hits and if he takes it down
at this point with ace high then Rock is very happy as well. The small
blind calls. Pot is now 3000. The Turn comes the Ah. Villian checks again. Rock bets out 1200,
less than half the pot, hoping for a call. Rock has a great hand at
this point with a nice draw. Villian again, just calls. The pot is now
5400 and we have spent 2600 each on this hand. The river comes the
Jc. Villian leads out with a bet of 1500. We just made the nut flush. What do we think Villian
has and what is our next move?

Post your responses and check back next week for the results.

Interesting hand this week,

Not sure I would have played it the way our hero did which got him into the bind he is now in.

I like the 3x bet pre-flop but I think he should have bumped it to at least 1600 after the flop. The 800 was too low and allowed anybody to chase that wanted to.

I put the villian on two pair (Aces & Jacks) at the turn and a boat on the river.

The best move our hero can make now is the fold his hand, lick his wounds and try to build up his stack again.

WOW!! quite the predicament here!! My first thought being that Villian has been "picky" with the hands he/she plays, is either pocket 9's or what Greg mentioned A/J. After the flop I like the continuation bet, 600-800 is good enough, you dont want to bet TOO excessively because YES you have a GREAT draw...but thats all it is....A DRAW, once Villian calls your instantly thinking top pair with an A or K kicker, or the 9's. Once the Ace comes up on the turn, and Villian checks to Hero, I like Hero's bet here, you have to think you may be ahead NOW, but once Villian calls, thats when you know instantly YOUR STILL DOWN!! now you defintly think A/J or the 9's. When the Jc comes on the river Hero hits his nut flush but the board pairs. When Villian who has checked to you all hand and smooth called every bet, and now leads out with a bet, Villian I believe MADE his/her full house....you have to fold YOUR NUT FLUSH!!!

The J on the river defintely sucks, but you just can't fold. There's alot you beat here (trip Jacks, a lower flush) So I just cross my fingers and call the last bet. That said, I think pocket 44 from Villian makes alot of sense - and maybe what's happened here. I don't think Villian is holding 99here. Being the small blind, Vilian would've likely protected 99 and raise your 600 preflop - Villian was out of position after the flop and likely facing a bet from you on any overcards. 44, KJ, QJ, AJ are all calling hands for Villian preflop. AJ is more likely than 99, but again I think Villian comes over the top after the flop with Top P/Top K.

I say just call.

He's slow playing pocket jacks. He has quads now. He bet knowing you may have hit the nut flush and wants you to reraise all in. Call him and cross your fingers he was holding Big Slick.

As we talked about in the podcast I really think he's got pocket 4s or 9s. His final bet of 1500 of the 2100 chips he has left is very suspicious, but you have call as you can beat A/9 or A/J which he could have - or that lower flush (say K/9 of spades).
