Hand of the Week - Pocket 9s

This Hand of the Week sponsored by Mike Behr Photography . For a full audio analysis listen to the 2009 Spring Session, Week 2 podcast.

Our hero is in a 45-player, $10 + $1 FullTilt Sit-n-go. It's early in the tourney with blinds at 15/30 (starting stacks of 1500).

We're under-the-gun (UTG) with pocket 9s - 9h/9c. We min bet to 60 and get 5 callers including our villain - the small blind (SB) which creates a pot of 330.

The flop is Kh/7c/6d. The SB checks. Our Hero bets out 120. Only the SB calls. The pot is now 570.

The turn is Js. The SB checks again. Our Hero bets out 240. The SB insta calls.

The river is 7h. The SB checks again. What is our move? Check or bet? (open folding is not an option).

Mark hates the UTG min bet. But, Phil doesn't.

Ultimately, both Mark and Phil feel that there's too much that can beat you by the river so don't risk the hand by opening it up with any sort of bet. Phil simply thinks we're behind - putting the SB on J/6 (for a better 2 pair - over our 9s and 7s). Mark thinks we have little idea of where we are at with the hand due to the preflop min bet. But, the insta call on the turn isn't good for us at all.

So, both say, "just check behind the SB, take the win if you've got it and minimize your loss if you're behind."

THE RESULTS:

Our Hero agrees with Mark and Phil and decides to check it.

The Villain shows down a suited Big Slick (Ac/Kc) for two pair: Ks and 7s to take down the pot over our 9s and 7s. He slow played a monster hand and let us do the betting for him which worked until we slowed down on the river.
