Hand of the Week - Fire the Third Bullet???

The Hand of the Week is sponsored by Mike Behr Photography . For a full audio analysis listen to the 2009 Spring Session, Week 4 podcast.

Our hero is in a 45-player, $10 + $1 FullTilt Sit-n-go. It's early in the tourney with blinds at 10/20 (starting stacks of 1500). The table is currently 8-handed as we've lost a player and our hero sits at 3170 in chips

We're under-the-gun (UTG) with pocket As - Ah/Ac. We make a standard raise to 60 and only the button calls.

The flop is 9d/Kd/6d. The SB checks. We're first to act and bet 60 into the pot of 150. The button raises to 180 and we smooth call it.

The turn is 5d (the fourth diamond). With the pot now at 510 we lead out with 120. The button calls.

The river brings a 3 and a flush on the board. Our question here is what to do? Fire the third bullet? Check/Raise? Check/Call?

Both Mark and Phil lean towards the check/fold (with a check/call if the button bets under 200). It's early in the tourney, we have a great chip stack and we think we're beat.

Results:

Mike mans-up and fires the third bullet with a "value bet" of 250 into the pot of 750.

The button folds.

Congrats to Mike on making a good move.

I think in all situations you have to be thinking what your opponent is thinking. It's likely when a scary board comes up that he/she is having the same thoughts as you are about it. In this scenario, as long as we continue making value bets its going to appear as if we have it and want the call. So if he is smart enough to deduce that then they will fold. I don't think this is a play that can be made every time this comes up but in this case the way the betting went it holds true. The raise on the flop indicated to me that he was trying to get me off the flush draw. If he had an A or a K of hearts it probably would have been smarter for him to call my bets and then make a raise on the river when he has roped me in. In that scenario we obviously fold.

Thanks for listening and responding and tune in this week for a special "hand of the week". Something new will be attempted and hopefully all will enjoy.
