Matthews Makes Run At TOC With Victory During Week 9!!

In what was absolutely the tightest CPL week in CPL history all 11 CPL Members were still 'hanging around' after 2 hours of play and 7 CPL Members were remaining as we went into Level 11 and the CPL Plaque Rounds!  However, the next 24 minutes during levels 11 and 12 would see the fall of 6 of these 7 members as the only Member left standing was Chris Matthews who, more than any other CPL member, really, really needed a great week.  And he delivered even as Chris took several naps during the CPL session!
Congrats Chris!

Congrats also goes out to Voni "The Rookie" as she came in second place during Week 9 and had a great heads up match against Chris which saw the CPL Plaques going back and forth and back and forth.  But in the end Chris had Big Slick and finished off the Rookie!  Congrats to Chris and to Voni!

CPL Honorable Mention goes to Blind Me Down Behr who played 3 hands all night, complained about 120 hands that he folded, and somehow took 3rd place.  Go figure.

Karaoke Phil's early big stack for the second week in a row was subject to deterioration throughout the match....hmmmm...a trend maybe?  And what about Yours Truly 'Verbal' who continues to go out on the point bubble and now with 2 CPL weeks remaining faces possible elimination from the very CPL TOC that he created? What Up Wit That!  Can he get down to business during the final weeks of the CPL session?  The CPL Point Record (currently held by 'Karaoke' Phil) is within reach for the second session in a row by 'Matusow' Matson!  Jeff would need to take first place during weeks 10 AND week 11 AND needs to have 12 members present during each week to break the record.

The CPL auditors have spent hours analyzing the current point standings and with 2 CPL week remaining have informed us that the following 3 CPL Members have CLINCHED a seat at the coveted CPL Tournament of Champions on Saturday November 15th!  Congrats!

Jeff 'Matusow' Matson Scores Second Victory During CPL Week 8!

In a stunning, stunning week of poker, graciously hosted by Blind Me Down, big stacks dominated the play....but did not guarantee a win.  Karaoke Phil was the first to experience this phenomenom as he amassed a huge stack early on by taking out Voni early and getting hit by about 3 decks certainly helps!  But this Karaoke big stack would not last as he saw it whittled away as the match went on.  Enter Matusow stage right who also obtained a big stack but would struggle during heads up play to close the deal against Blind Me Down.

Then you have the 'River Artists' of the evening (Blind Me Down, Verbal) who came back from death several times to finish in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.  The Suck Out standard to win a week at the CPL held up during Week 8 as Verbal sucked out 3 times (Twice against Matusow), but could not achieve the ever-allusive '4th suck out' to take the CPL top spot.

Congratulations to Matusow for an impressive Week 8 and his second win of the Winter Session to claim the top of the CPL Leaderboard!

CPL Honorable Mention goes to Bill 'Comeback Kid' Lanoux who didn't play a hand until about 9:30...then 3 hands later went all in and lost. Wow.

The Blind Me Down "Hand of the Week" - Omaha H/L

Another week has gone by and that means the answer to last weeks hand
and a brand new hand to think about. To recap please read the
previous hand of the week. We were faced with a min. raise from late
position and we called with our trip 4's in hopes that we could beat
at least the late position player. Sadly we couldn't. The cut off
took down the side pot with 7s 9s and the small blind won the main
pot with Ks 6s. Beat by 2 flushes on the river. Rivered again as my
dad would say.

Now, onto this weeks hand. We are going to mix things up a bit this
time with an Omaha H/L hand. I'm going to try and throw a non hold em
hand in every now and then for those that prefer other games. This
hand comes from a $24+2 $4000 guarantee HORSE tournament on Full
Tilt. Typically this tournament will get between 165-200 entries and
pays out to 24. We have made it into the money out of the 167 that
were signed up and the blinds are 1000/2000. We've been in the money
for about 10 minutes of play now and are down to 18 players. Our hero
is in the small blind and posts 500. We are dealt Ah Ac 4d 10c. Under
the gone (big stack at table 22,128) calls the 1000 as does seat 4
(just below average stack 13,454). It folds around to us and we have
7,220 left. Omaha is not our strongest game here and we have a short
stack, but not the shortest at the table. We decide to just call. Big
blind checks and the hand is underway with a pot of 4000 to start.
The flop comes 8c kh 2c. I'm pretty happy about this flop but
concerned about a better low at the table so I just check hoping to
check call this down and hit my nut flush. The big stack under the
gun bets a 1000 and everyone but the big blind calls. Pot is now
7000. Turn is the 2d. This card likely hurt a low draw for someone as
well as us so we check. The big stack bets 2000, seat 4 raises to
4000 and we are left with our decision. We have 5220 left and would
put us on the short stack for the tournament. We have a low draw with
the A 4 and a nut flush draw with the 2 clubs on the board. Its
possible to hit a high club and scoop the pot, hit a low non club and
take the low or hit an ace for a full house and take the high and
possible scoop as well if no one hits the low. Do we shove our chips
in now or wait for a better hand?

Listen to the podcast for our resident Omaha expert Karaoke Phil
describe what he would do and how I probably screwed this hand up
completely from the very start. Wait, that's Mark that will tell you
I screwed it up from the very start as he would NEVER get him self
into these type of situations. Anyway, until next time, enjoy all the
games poker has to offer. Even if you're bad at them.

Canterbury Park laying off 60

Canterbury Park announced last Friday that it will complete the layoff of roughly 10 percent of its work force (60 full and part-time positions), by the end of October. Increased competition from the Running Aces card room as well as current economic conditions are forcing the move.

CPL Poker Blog Site Traffic

Okay, the first month of Google Analytics is in and here are some highlights (this is basically site traffic for those who aren't familiar with "Analytics").

We had 377 visits from 107 unique visitors. This came from 11 countries and 59 cities. Here's the map of the locations our visits came from to us:

As you can see we're pretty heavy on Minnesota, but we're trying to expand and grow. Prelimary numbers from month two seem to bear this out. Our top 5 cities visiting us are Minneapolis, St. Paul, Hopkins, Circle Pines and Hennepin County (all here in the Twin Cities).
As for keyword searches the two card rooms we talk about the most (Canterbury Park and Running Aces) lead the way. Searches for Canterbury Park (including their Fall Poker Classic) yielded us 10 visits. Running Aces variants brought in 8. Our Home Poker League resources (which we added well into the month) accounted for 7 visits, with folks looking for various poker definitions brought in 4 more. Finally, the now resurrected Hand of the Week had 2 web searched hits.
Ahh, fun with numbers.

Nanoman Takes CPL Week 7!

Shane 'Nanoman' Converse who has been sparse during this CPL session due to his fall softball league, showed during Week 7 that he still remembers how to win, by taking out the field and scoring a first place finish!

Congrats to Voni "The Rookie" for her comeback during wek 7 to finish in the 2nd spot.  The heads up battle between Nanoman and The Rookie was very interesting to watch as the chips went back and forth...both players had chances to win the tournament before Nanoman closed the deal.

CPL Honorable mention goes to Vince "The Cursed One" for taking 5th and for hosting a wonderful "Surly Beer Night" during week 7!

Blind Me Down's Report: Fall Poker Classic Event #7, NLHE

Listen to the upcoming podcast for a more in-depth discussion, but when asked how his entry into Event #7 (a $200 + $30 NLHE event) at Canterbury's Fall Poker Classic went Mike "Blind Me Down" Behr responded:

"I'm just going to say that I've never had less fun playing poker as I did at that event."

Karaoke Phil's Report: Fall Poker Classic Event #6, OH8

This is the 2nd year I’ve played the Fall Poker Classic’s OH8 event. Last year (2007) there were 213 entrants for this $200 + $30 event. At the time I was intrigued with OH8, but hadn’t really played much more than a handful of low buy-in tournaments. I thought I did “okay” and busted out at around 100th. The highlight of that day was then going to play some 2/4 Limit Hold ‘em, getting my first ever live straight flush and, thereby, winning a Canterbury Park baseball cap (winning the hand was nice too).

This year saw 199 entrants. Over the past year and, particularly the last 6 months, I have been working on both my HORSE and OH8 games. So, I entered the tournament feeling pretty good about my play and my chances. The tourney structure starts with 3000 chips, 30-minute blind levels and blinds at 25/50 (with betting at 50/100).

I held steady during Level 1 ending with 2950 in chips. Level 2 saw the first elimination from the tournament and I ended with 3600 chips. Level 3 was flat for me and had 3500 chips going into Level 4.

It was in Level that I made some strong moves (and got some good cards). My peak for the level was at about 6500 chips, but I took a hit on the last hand of the level (just before break) and ended with 4800. At break I counted 108 players left (the tourney clock listed 125 but they were consistently slow in recording the knock outs).

Level 5 was flat for me and I finished with 4400 chips. Level 6 was a break out level for me that carried into Level 7. I finished Level 6 with 14800 chips and Level 7 with 16000.

Level 8 nearly saw my demise. With blinds at 1000/1500 and betting at 1500/3000 I was dealt A/3/4/6 in early position with 7800 left in chips (I had taken some hits earlier). I’m first in and decide to try and trap – so I limp in. I had a fairly aggressive (and good) player immediately to my left. He raises to 3000. Only the big blind calls and were three handed (10000 in the pot). The flop comes 3/5/T with the 5/T suited in something I didn’t have. The BB checks. I didn’t want to bet out yet (knew my opponent on the left would do it). Plus, I hadn’t quite hit what I wanted yet with only two pair, a flush and possible straight draws against me and my having only 4 cards to a non-nut low. The UTG bets 1500, which was called by the big blind and myself (14500 in the pot). The turn brought a 4 (3/5/T/4 on the board) – I felt that my opponent on the left had an A/2 within his 4 cards. I figured the big blind for something less than the nuts and/or maybe a flush draw. The BB checked and I opted to check and the UTG player immediately bet out 3000. The button smooth called. I thought long and hard about whether to call or not with 3 pair and a low of A/3/4/5/6. Again, I felt he had an A/2 (now giving him the nut low and a wheel). I went through my outs – An A, 3 or 4 give me strong boats (6 of those left), and a 2 gives me a 6 high straight and a nut low chop (4 of those left). All in all that’s 10 outs. Then there is the possibility that just maybe I’m ahead (though I don’t think so). Then there’s the big blind – a loose player who could have anything but was probably chasing that flush draw. With 20500 in the pot – I called and added 3000 more – leaving me 300 chips left. The river bricked me completely when a K came out. UTG bets out 3000 again and the button calls. There are now 29500 chips in the pot (I can play for 24100 of it). I stop. I think. I think some more. I think long enough (probably 35 or 40 seconds that I’m sure everyone else at the table is thinking, “It’s 300 into a pot of 30K – CALL”). I know I’m beat – I fold and keep my 300. So, what did they have? UTG turns over A/A/2/5 for the nut low and a wheel. The Button shows 2/7/K/K – he was chasing a K-high flush that didn’t hit (and rivered a set that wasn’t good enough).

Two hands later I’m forced all-in in the big blind. I triple up to 900. I’m forced all-in the next hand in the SB and quadruple up to 3600. I sit out the next two hands (I would’ve scooped them both). A few hands after that I make a stand and more than double up and end Level 8 with 8500 in chips.

We go to break with 34 players remaining. I’m sitting in about 25th. The top 18 will get paid.

Level 9 begins with blinds at 1K/2K. I lay down both blinds to preflop raises leaving me 5500 in chips. I finally get 2/2/3/8 double suited and decide to make my stand – all the money gets in preflop with me and another player all-in versus my nemesis to the left. I lose and bust out in 27th place – 15 minutes into Level 9. I’m relatively pleased with my finish. I saw great improvement over the previous year and know I can compete. I thought overall I played a “B” grade game that would’ve been a “B+” without that Level 8 hand (had I folded on the turn and saved 3K in chips). Just a little better play and I make the money.

I go to the buffet and use my tourney comp ticket for dinner – a nice meal of mashed potatoes and gravy, great roast beef au jus, and warm cherry cobbler. It’s a good dinner, but not worth $230.

The Blind Me Down "Hand of the Week" - It's back!

Well I'm back ladies and gents, or in the words of Jeff, Donkeys.
We've got an all new "Hand of the Week". For those of you who are not
familiar with this, I will post a scenario of a hand I played during
the week. Then leave the ending for you to contemplate. The next week
I will post the answer and hopefully there will be some DISCUSSION on
it. Play nice though, we don't need people poking giants in the
stomach telling them they shouldn't have played A 9 off suit on the
button with 1 player left before the points. Or something like that.
Sorry Bill, had to. Ok, so here we go.

Our hero is sitting in a 24+2 45 player sit n go on Full Tilt. We are
only 15 min. into the tournament and have 3200 in chips. It's a
fairly loose table so far and we have doubled up through some really
bad players. I'm sitting in the big blind and look down at 3d 4c. It
folds around to the 7th position who calls the 50, as does the cut
off, button and small blind. We are 5 handed and I check to see a
flop with a pot of 250. The board shows 4s 5d 4h rainbow. Not a bad
flop. The small blind checks and we decide to get tricky here and
just check to see what's going to happen with the others. My plan
here was to check raise and take it down or catch someone trying to
be the hero. Remember, we're the hero. So it checks all the way
around and my plan fails. The turn is the 2s. Pretty good card for
us. Gives me a set with an open ended straight draw. I decide to bet
150 into the pot of 250 and try to build it up so we can get some
chips. 7th position folds and the cut off calls. His chip stack was
3780 when the hand started. The button folds and the small blind who
started the hand with 745 chips calls. So now we are 3 handed going
to the river with a pot of 700. The last card is the Js. The small
blind thinks about this for about 10 to 15 seconds and pushes his
remaining 545 in the pot. I think about it for a couple of seconds
and call. The big stack in the cut off who has us covered min raises
it to 1090. After calling the all in from the small blind we have
2455. If we called the min raise we would have 1910 and if we pushed
he has us covered. What do we put him on and what do we do?

Now think long and hard, discuss the hand, and I'll be back next week
with the answer and a whole new pile of problems.

Google is 10 years old - and, another blast from the past

Okay, the Google blog post is two weeks old, but you can read a little about their 10th b'day here. The reason we're bringing this up is two fold: first, the old email from Mark "Verbal" Cardenas to Karaoke Phil Fuehrer inviting him to (and into the world of) poker (posted here) was a blast from the past; second - as part of Google's celebrations they've made available their oldest remaining archive records (apparently from 2001). What does that really mean? Another blast from the past!!!

Check out Karoake Phil's 1999 web site from his run for St. Paul City Council here:
http://web.archive.org/web/20010508091536/www.users.qwest.net/~pfuehrer/City_Council_run_1999.htm

And, check out a decade younger "Verbal" here (from his days as a Rockstar - rumor has it that Nickleback's song of the same name was written largely due to Mark):
http://web.archive.org/web/20010412021032/www.getstew.com/index.html

Be sure to click on Mark's name on the bottom row picture. Then notice how they butchered his name in the top header (blue) bar. The older version had the same spelling on the main page.

Report from Jeff "Matusow": OH8 Tournament results from Running Aces Card Room

There were 38 starters on four tables. Pay out was to 7 places which surprised me given the low number of entries. The play was pretty bad early on and several players were playing every hand until they either had massive stacks or got knocked out (usually the former than the latter) ANDd I was fairly card dead. At the end of the 1st break I had won just two 1/4 pots (splitting the low both times) and lost another one when I had every out in the world for a scoop or at least 1/2. I think in all three pots I had at least one nut flush draw and straight draw after the turn with the nut low already locked up but couldn't hit. On only one hand did I get in trouble by donking off about 400 chips when I should never have called the flop bet.We returned from break and I had only 2500 chips with blinds of 200/400. I tripled up shortly after that when I flopped a boat out of the big blind and there was no low. I slowly lost chips again but hung around through level six and made the second break. There were only 11 left and we were coming back to blinds of 800/1600 and I only had 4800 left. I work to build my stack up to around 10,000 but then doubled up a short-stack up when he hit a two outer on the river. When we broke for the final table I was down to 7200 (avg. stack was around 18k.) I paid a round of blinds, someone got knocked out, and when I was UTG and the blinds about to reach 1k/2k I picked up A244 with suited A. I raised to 3200 and an awful player called in LP. The blinds folded. I went all-in blind for my last 1600 and he called. I don't remember the exact flop but I know that after the turn I needed a 7 or 8 for a low and half the pot and an A, 4, 5 or diamond for a scoop of the 12,000 chip pot. The river was a ten of clubs and I was out in 9th place -- losing to nothing more than the donkey's 88xx with now low possibility.

Oh boy - Running Aces 10,000 Lakes Poker Tourney more than just the HPT

Oh yeah! This is hot! The 10,000 Lakes Poker Tournament is more than a Heartland Poker Tour event - though that is the capstone. This is Running Aces' counterpart to Canterbury Park's Fall Poker Classic and another example of the benefit to Twin Cities area poker players.

The 10K LPT starts on Nov. 5th with a $200 +$30 NLHE event. All-in-all there will be 10 events plus the HPT Main Event. Events include a "Celebrity" tourney, Ladies-only, Deep Stack, Add-ons, Shorthanded, and...wait for it.....an OH8 tourney - something for everyone. Buy-ins obviously include the popular $200+$30 and $300+$40 but you can also get in for $125+$25, $50+$20 and $50+$15 depending on the tourney (a price range for everyone).

You can check out the full schedule for the 10K LPT at: http://www.runningacesharness.com/gaming/tournament_flyers/HEARTLAND.pdf

NewLife Takes Down CPL Week 5!

Wine Night at the CPL is always interesting....and this sessions Wine Night did not disappoint!
With 10 CPL members tasting everything from Shiraz to White Zin, jazz and blues in the background, and some crazy sauerkraut pizza brought by Comeback Kid, and you have a CPL Poker week to remember!

First off...the evening was over quickly for the CPL Director with A-J off as he was COOLER'd by 'Matusow' who picked up a set of 6's on the flop (J-8-6) while Verbal hit top pair out of position.  After a big bet by Verbal was called by Matusow...the death Ace on the turn gave Verbal top two pair and pretty much sealed his fate as he went all in falling square into the trap set by Matusow.  Nice hand Jeff!

But the night belonged to NewLife who had Lady Luck on his side as the blinds started to increase.  This luck turned into amazing suck outs at the end of the evening (I think we counted 4) and it was a suck out that gave him the win over Nemesis as NewLife's 8-5 out drew Nemesis' A-10 by hitting a straight on the River....

This win by NewLife however does answer a long running question in the CPL.
How many suck outs does it take to win a CPL week? Apparently 4.

Congrats to NewLife for his win and taking over the lead on the CPL Leaderboard!

One final note...5 weeks into this session of the CPL and we've had 5 separate winners....only 15 points separate the top 7 CPL members....hmmmm...sounds like we've got another very competitive CPL Session!!
